How will this show up on invoices?
You will now see a tax added to your monthly invoice with the appropriate lesson location as an abbreviation.
-
How Zoom Lessons are Taxed:
Tax is determined by where the lesson is received, not where the lesson is given.
1. Lessons attended at the Maple Valley studio will incur the Maple Valley tax. (currently 8.9%)
2. Lessons attended online will be taxed at the student’s location. (ex. Sammamish - current rate 10.2%)
Upon enrollment, you will be given a secured form to fill out with your address (or where you will take Zoom lessons from).
-
Tax Adjustments for Unplanned Zoom Lessons:
If you have to unexpectedly attend your lesson via Zoom (illness/travel), please let us know ASAP.
You will receive an adjustment on your invoice to reflect the lessons taxed for Zoom locations.
-
How To Pay for Tax Adjustment Invoices:
If your tax adjustment invoice is less than $2, you will not be able to pay via your invoice.
Please fulfill the payment via Venmo
Include the Zoom Lesson Date, Invoice Number, and “Tax Adjustment” in the note.
-
What This Means for Lesson Formats:
To maintain compliance and accuracy (and the best opportunity for musical growth), we encourage students to stick to in-studio lessons unless they are ill
or
maintain a consistent, agreed-upon HYBRID schedule (ex. every other week on Zoom, or one lesson a month on Zoom etc.)

What law does this reference?
This tax requirement is grounded in Washington Revised Code (RCW) 82.04.050, which defines what constitutes a “retail sale.” According to RCW 82.04.050:
“The term ‘sale at retail’ or ‘retail sale’ includes … (18) The sale of or charge made for live presentations, including lectures, seminars, workshops, and courses, where participants and the presenter interact in real time.” Washington State Legislature
That means private voice lessons (whether in person or online in real time) are now legally treated as retail services and subject to sales tax, effective as of legislation enacted for new tax definitions.
